Fann Wong Earns Nomination at HK Film Awards
2000-03-03
Hong Kong - Come April 16, fans of actress Fann Wong will be keeping their fingers cross that their idol will be the first Singapore citizen to be bring home the Best New Performer award at the 19th Hong Kong Film Awards, E-online reported.Wong, the princess of local television, scored the nomination through her portrayal as a reformed brat in the 1999 Raintree Pictures film The Truth About Jane and Sam. The other nominees for the Best New Performer category includes Taiwanese singer-actor Ritchie Ren for his role as a blind and mute person in Fly Me to Polaris, and Hong Kong starlet Cecilia Cheung who received two nominations for King of Comedy, her maiden project and her second big screen outing Fly Me to Polaris. The word has it that chances are, Wong will come home from Hong Kong's equivalent of the Oscars empty-handed. The wholesome Cheung, a huge star in Hong Kong and the media's darling, is the hot favorite. In a recent survey conducted by a local daily, it appears that most Singaporeans say that Wong will not win, as they do not think that she can act. Seems like Wong still have a long way to go to convince her fellow countrymen that her acting prowess is beyond her trademark cutesy Hello Kitty style.
