HK TV stations raise HK$32m relief donation
1998-08-17
Hong Kong's two major television channels collected more than HK$30 million for mainland flood victims over the weekend. ATV and TVB staged marathon shows on Friday and Saturday nights respectively. ATV raised HK$10 million while TVB collected HK$22 million from its Saturday show. Top artists, including movie star Jackie Chan Kwong-sang and Canto pop singer Anita Mui Yim-fong, performed for donations or donated precious items, furniture or antiques for sale. During the seven-hour TVB show, Jackie Chan donated two antique chairs for auction. He also gave 1,000 bags of rice and 1,000 bottles of water to the flood victims. Other artists who had nothing to donate made personal sacrifices to raise money. TVB artist Ngai Chun-kit went bald for HK$250,000. Other TVB artists went outdoors appealing for donations. Female artist Yiu Lok-yee was one of eight others who helped clean car windscreens at various petrol stations. At ATV, enthusiasm to help was less vigorous. Its artists had to canvas for donations at major shopping malls, such as Times Square in Causeway Bay. The ATV show raised HK$10 million. Both television shows broadcast an appeal for donations by Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa who urged members of the public to offer a helping hand to fellow nationals affected by the floods on the mainland.
