Pusan Fillm Festival to Open with "Chinese Box"
1997-10-03
HONG KONG - Hong Kong filmmakers will get the red-carpet treatment at the second Pusan International Film Festival, which will run from October 10-18 in South Korea's second-largest city, Reuter reported. Wayne Wang's ``Chinese Box,'' set during the handover of Hong Kong to China in July, will open the festival. Wang and his leading man, British Oscar winner Jeremy Irons, are expected to attend what will be the film's Asian premiere. It is not clear if leading actress, Gong Li, will attend or not. The "Chinese Box", one of 18 contendors for the Golden Lion Award at the 54th International Venice Film Festival, is beautifully shot and mixes real footage of Chinese paramount leader Deng Xiaoping's death and the handover ceremony with the fictional story, depicting storying taking place over the six months leading up to the end of British colonial rule at midnight on June 30, 1996 (see related story). Ann Hui, one of Hong Kong's few female filmmakers, will close out the festival with ``Eighteen Springs,'' an epic set in 1930s Shanghai. Hui will be on hand for the film's Asian premiere along with actors Leon Lai and Anita Mui. Also on hand will be directors Wong Kar-Wai (Happy Together) and Shu Kei (Queer Story). The festival will also include a retrospective of Hong Kong films, including early works by Jackie Chan and John Woo.
