MENDOZA, Argentina - China beat the United States 1-0 Sunday on Bo Qu's goal early in the second half of the opening Group C match at FIFA's World Youth Championship.

It was a surprising loss for the United States, which coasted through qualifying for the tournament by outscoring opponents by a combined 11-2, AP reported.

In the 50th minute, Qu broke into the penalty area and, shrugging off a U.S. defender, drove the ball past goalkeeper Delvin Countess before about 1,000 spectators in the 36,000-capacity Malvinas Argentinas stadium in this western city.

By the end of the first half, China was dominating the action, and the United States was forced to commit most of its players to defense, leaving Conor Casey virtually alone up front.

Landon Donovan's low shot went barely wide in the 31st minute - the Americans' only genuine scoring threat before halftime.

In the 38th, Countess stretched to tap away a powerful shot from the edge of the area by Ming Gao.

U.S. substitute Alecko Eskandarian missed a superb chance to tie the game in the 59th, when he took Bobby Convey's pass but kneed the ball wide.

The United States had won its opening match at this tournament each of the past three times, including a 1-0 victory over China in Malaysia in 1997.

Ukraine and Chile, who played later Sunday, are the other two teams in Group C. The 24-nation tournament finishes July 8.

The United States plays Chile on Wednesday.
